Baptisms at Church in a Building

Sam Tyndall, St. Cuthbert’s, Marton, Middlesbrough

On Sunday 1st October Dan Watson and Chris Lethbridge were baptised at Church in a Building. Chris and Dan are the first adults to get baptised at Church in a Building. It was a joyful afternoon celebrating their baptism by full immersion.

Church in a Building is a new worshipping community of St Cuthbert's Church Marton (South Middlesbrough), led by Multiply Minister Rev. Sam Tyndall. Church in a Building has been meeting weekly since March 2021, when the families who had been receiving 'Church in a Bag' deliveries during Covid began meeting in person for worship.

Church in a Building meets at 4pm on Sundays in the Church Hall. Each week they explore a bible passage using crafts, active games, songs, and an interactive prayer time. The theme for the Baptism service was the story of the jailer (Acts 16) who sees God at work and responds by putting his faith in Jesus and being baptised.

Chris has been part of the St Cuthberts in Coulby Newham community since the beginning. His family got Church in a Bag deliveries, came to some of our first in person services, and our family camping trips. Chris has been a key member of the 5-a-side football group which has built new community among dads from church and beyond.  Chris' journey of faith has involved drawing closer to God over several years, including taking part in a Start Course and the recent Alpha Course that the church ran. Chris chose Frank to be his sponsor due to the big part he played in his coming to faith. Chris and Frank are colleagues and Frank has often given up time in the working day to answer Chris' questions and talk to him about Jesus.

Dan and his family joined the church in Spring 2023, having not had contact with the church before. Dan got in touch with the church after responding to God's call on his life, which came through exploring faith online and discussions with his daughter about things she had learnt at her Catholic school. Dan has also taken part in the Alpha Course, which has given him space to go deeper and ask questions about his new found faith.
